Day Four: Temples and Landslides

9/9/2011

Today was the day I planned! It went really well. :)

First Stop: Guru Nanak Dev Ji Gurudwara Temple. This is the locations of some hot springs that are so hot you can just put bags of rice in the water and boil it. They add cold water to the hot spring water in order to bath in it..

The fed us lunch here.

These guys worked at the temple serving food. They kept wanting to take pictures with us. In fact they took turns taking pictures with groups of us. It was only fair we got their picture in return.

Then we went to the bazaar in the back streets of Manikaran.

We met  back up at the temple then all of a sudden all of these India people wanted to take pictures with us. Here’s the first of it:

Then, a bunch of Indian girls would first group around one of us, and then move on to another one of us in order to get pictures with us. This went on for at least 10 minutes or so. I mean, I suppose it worked out because we were both equally curious and wanting to take pictures. Either way, it was hilarious.

We went to another temple, the name of which I’m trying to figure out. It was very cool. At one point you basically had to crawl into a cave. In the cave we were all given bracelets made out of “holy thread”.  I’ve got mine on now! No pictures allowed there unfortunately.

Luggar Bhatti landslide shown below (seen behind the group to the left). The landslide was triggered in 1995 as a result of the steepness of the slope, high pore-water pressures due to continual seepage of rainwater, the road-cut under the base of the alluvial fan, and toe erosion from the Beas River during overflow conditions.

We saw this on the way to dinner. Hilarious.

Today we went from Bhunter to Manikaran to Manali
